Marine grade 316L stainless steel sheet adds 2.0 to 3.0 percent molybdenum to the standard 18 8 chemistry, and that single alloying addition is what keeps the surface passive in chloride laden air and salt spray. The molybdenum blocks the pitting and crevice corrosion that ordinary 304 develops within months on a coastal facade or a dockside handrail. The low carbon 316L variant also resists sensitisation at weld seams, so fabricated tanks and frames keep their corrosion
